Money Matters with Wes Moss – May 10, Hour 2
In the second hour of the Money Matters Radio Show, Certified Financial Planner™ Wes Moss continues the discussion of five keys to investing in volatile times.
5 Keys for investing in volatile times
Rules that I’ve seen very successful investors follow religiously
- Remember times are ALWAYS Volatile and uncertain
- US Since 1900 34 bear markets = every 3.1 years
- Remember the 1940s Pearl Harbor and WWII…France had fallen but if you missed 1942-45 you missed 150%
- Invest For Yourself! YOUR GOALS
- Goals, Risk, Time Horizon, and Debt gone first (saving pyramid)
- Emergency Cash, ST Cash, Match 401k, Roth IRA, Max 401k, Taxable
- Emphasis on Income, Discuss Bogle “own your age in bonds”…
- Use only as a guide
- Understand Fixed income risk/reward
- Difficult to Time
- Stats…New updated research on the S&P 500 shows the following, even after a terrible 2008…20 YEARS
- 1989 through 2008…$10K = $49k or 8.3% missing no days
- 1989 through 2008…$10K = $16k or 2.4% missing 20 days
- RELAX:
- Monitor, Stay informed, rebalance, work with an advisor, feel comfortable, SWAN…because with the right planning you can relax
- Small, non-drastic changes
